Current Seasonal Tips:
Heating and air flow are different as we move from hot and humid days when we need lots of cooling to the cycle where we need to turn on the heating system at night. You don't always need a system technician to make some changes that could save you money and make your home more comfortable at the same time.
If your heating and air conditioning system are properly designed, when the air conditioner or the furnace shut off, or in other words have completed their cycle, all of your home should be equally comfortable. However, the sun doesn't shine with equal intensity on all rooms throughout the day. Many people find that they have one or two rooms that are too hot or too cold. That's why forced-air systems have adjustable vents.
To make the most of your comfort, as the weather changes you may need to adjust the air flow to each room in order to make each room equally comfortable. Doing so will typically save money as well because you are not turning the thermostat a couple of degrees higher in order to find comfort.
Here is an example for the current change of seasons:
Let's say that you have one room on the West side of the house that takes a real beating from the sun every afternoon, and in the summer that room had a tendency to be too hot in the evening because of all the heat radiated by the materials of which your home is made. In a properly balanced system, this would have been offset by restricting the flow of cold air to other rooms and opening the ductwork carrying cooled air to this room wide open for maximum air flow.
Now, we are moving to cooler days and some cold nights. That room still gets full sun all afternoon long, but the wide open ductwork means that we are pumping maximum heat there all night long on a cold night when it was already the warmest room in the house. Now it is going to be absolutely hot all night long! If it happens to be the only occupied bedroom, it would allow you to turn the heat way down at night and only concentrate on comfort in that room alone. If there are more than one occupied rooms at night, the other residents are going to freeze, or people in this room are going to sweat. If the room we are focusing on is not occupied at night, we are likely adjusting the thermostat for comfort in the bedrooms and wasting money by pumping most of our heat into this unoccupied room.
The solution? You may need to close the vent half-way or even entirely in this room during the winter, while making sure all the other vents in the house are fully open. If you find that your home cannot be properly balanced in both summer and winter by adjusting the duct vents. or they make loud noises when you restrict their air flow, you may need dampers installed within one or more ducts. That way, your air flow can be balanced without creating a disturbing noise in the room. Damper installation is not very expensive as most home improvements go, and can easily pay for itself in a couple of seasons. Clearly, however, you can try adjusting air flow yourself without any cost except a few minutes of your time. If you find you cannot get things properly balanced, give us a call and we will be glad to make your system work efficiently and economically. Our phone number is (281) 705-0167.
